Last weekend, Aqua traveled all the way to the beautiful Akkrum! After a long public transport journey - for most of us at least - we were welcomed at a (quite random) dock with a nice cup of soup.
Once everyone had finished their soup, we took the boats to the harbour, meaning we already got our first "sailing" experience in on Friday evening! This sailing experienxe was quite special experience, as we motored about 15 minutes through the dark in Akkrum. Once we were at the harbour, we set up all the boattents and had some drinks before heading to bed.
We were not the only student sailing association spending the weekend there: Lagakari (Student Sailing Maastricht) was staying at the same harbour. This caused some slight identity confusion throughout the weekend. People kept coming up to us asking where they had to go or whether we knew certain people, to which we repeatedly had to answer: “No sorry, we’re Aqua.”
On Saturday we went sailing, of course. There wasn’t a huge amount of wind, but luckily there was just enough to get us around. We sailed towards the Sneekermeer, where there was also a sailing competition taking place that weekend. This meant carefully maneuvering our way through what felt like every type of boat in Friesland (very pretty ones too!!).
We had lunch at Starteiland, where we also ran into WSSFS, the Wageningen Frisian Association. Apparently, the Sneekermeer was the place to be for Dutch student sailors that weekend :)
After lunch, we continued sailing. Anje was very eager to play Boeibal, but unfortunately not everyone shared her enthusiasm.
In the evening, we had wraps, very deliciously prepared by Jette’s boat, and after dinner we drank cocktails at the yearly Drijfveer party! Unfortunately, the party was… not exactly partying. Some of us gave it a chance for a while, some went to visit our new neighbours at Lagakari, and the rest stayed at our campsite to play games instead.
On Sunday, the wind finally understood the assignment! We headed back to the Sneekermeer and once again had lunch at Starteiland. This time, however, one important item was added to the programme: Boeibal! Anje’s persistence had finally paid off.
After some more sailing, it was time to head back. We had to be at the harbour by 16:30, to make sure we would be back at this time, some boat treid to team up and sail like a catamaran to maybe get a little bit of extra speed. This was not very effective though, as we were back around 20 minutes later than we wanted and quickly had to clean all the boats and pack everything up. Somehow we did managed to catch our train at 17:45. A surprisingly efficient ending :)
All in all, it was a very sailing-filled and very fun weekend. It was especially nice to meet so many new members, and we hope everyone enjoyed it as much as we did!
